Site Down. Patch:Review by CheeseCake:I would like to say something first before proceeding with this review: Stay away from the GBA version.

It seriously sucks. The localization is abyssmal and the GBA “downgrade” from the PSX was terribly done.Tales of Phantasia is the first mothership title of the series. The PS1 version is the 1st remake of the Tales of Phantasia on the SNES using Tales of Destiny’s battle system. Rescue the enchanter cheats. It was developed by Namco Tales Studio(formerly Wolf Team) and published by Namco Bandai Games. The 2nd remake is GBA: Stay away from it.The 3rd remake is on the PSP bundled with Tales of Phantasia Narikiri Dungeon X, the remake of the sequel.(It’s two games in one ISO)There will probably be a 4th remake at some point with an updated battle system. The story starts off with a group of 4 heroes fighting the sorcerer Dhaos and defeats him. Dhaos flees to another era where he is sealed by the original heroes’ descendants and peace was restored to the world. When you gain control, you will be using Cless Alvein in the village of Toltus.I do not want to spoil anymore of the story, sorry. The old description was such a huge spoiler. The story picks up after you areTransported to the past era to gain magic to fight Dhaos since conventional weapons don’t damage him. He has plot immunity until your next battle when you travel back to the present. You will be traveling through three time eras: The Past, Present, and the Future. The battle system, as I said above, uses an updated version of Tales of Destiny’s battle system. It is pretty slow and that’s okay considering Tales of Destiny was an early 1998 PS1 game.It is standard Tales fare with your enemies on one side and allies on the other.

You fight in real time with your characters and control how they move and attack. There is also a combination tech system using “technique books”( for lack of a better word) that allows you learn a combined skill if you 100% mastered the two required skillsYou may switch which character you play with by moving that character to the first slot. You don’t gain much techniques at the start so don’t drop the game after only 1 or 2 hours of playing. You have to grind/level if you want more techniques.Things to take noteArche’s magics aren’t gained through leveling like everyone else. You must find her magic in spell books scattered across the world and three time eras. Check bookcases often or consult a walkthrough, I had to for some of the spells I missed.Klarth gets nothing at the start too because he uses Summoning Magic so you have to defeat the Summon Spirits to gain their favor and spells.Klarth and Arche are your main attack mages while Mint is your healer and Cless is the vanguard. You get more than 4 allies and can switch them out for Chester and Suzu.My own personal gameplay video. I sucked a little since I was using ePSXe with keyboard controls instead of my PSP. Some lag and sound corruption since it’s my first video. If you like this I recommend Tales of Eternia(localized) and Tales of Rebirth(there’s a translation guide on GameFaqs). Both are on the PSP.How to play on PSP: Copy the folder containing the EBOOT.PBP to PSPGAME, note that each eboot needs to be 'in a folder', else they'll show up as corrupted data. Example Path: X:PSPGAMESLPS-01770EBOOT.PBPRecommended Emulator: Some 'PSX2PSP' eboots can be emulated on PC with ePSXe emulator.
